A remarkable Disney animated short, 100 years in the making, is now available for streaming after its debut on ABC last night.
Titled “Once Upon a Studio,” this enchanting nine-minute creation invites viewers into a whimsical world where characters from the illustrations on the walls of Walt Disney Animation Studios spring to life.

Boasting a cast of over 500 animated characters from the studio’s rich 100-year history, “Once Upon a Studio” showcases these beloved figures in their original animation styles. Moreover, more than 40 voice actors reprise their roles, breathing fresh life into the characters. Notably, audiences will catch a new glimpse of Ariana DeBose’s Asha, who is set to lead Disney’s centennial feature, “Wish.”
In a nod to cinematic history, the short also incorporates archival recordings of characters whose original voice actors have passed away. This includes the iconic Genie voiced by the late Robin Williams in “Aladdin.” The use of these recordings was approved by Williams’ estate and notably, no AI was employed in generating these new vocals.
A Tribute to a Disney Legend
“Once Upon A Studio” also pays homage to the prolific Disney Imagineer, Burny Mattinson, who tragically passed away in February 2023. Mattinson’s illustrious career with Disney spanned over seven decades, commencing with uncredited work on 1955’s “Lady and the Tramp” and concluding nearly 40 films later as a story artist on “Strange World” (2022).
